Chengdu Food Guide: Hotpot, Noodles, Teahouses, and Mild Ways In
Chengdu food has heat, but it is not only about pain. The city is better when you mix hotpot with noodles, dumplings, teahouse snacks, and a slower afternoon. Start mild if you are unsure, then climb. A brave first meal can ruin the next day; a measured one keeps the trip alive.

Keep it light before sightseeing
A small bowl of noodles, guokui, or dumplings works well before the panda base or a museum morning.
Use snack-style meals
Dan dan noodles, Zhong dumplings, Long chaoshou, and sweet water noodles let you try several flavors without committing to a giant table.
Hotpot needs space
Treat Sichuan hotpot as the main event. Order vegetables, tofu, and non-spicy broth if the table needs balance.
Try cold dishes carefully
Bobo chicken and cold chicken slices can be spicy even when served cold. Ask about spice level before ordering big.
Where to Look
- Kuanzhai Alley is convenient but touristy; use it for atmosphere, not your only meal.
- Yulin and Nijiaqiao for casual restaurants, bars, and local-feeling dinners.
- Wenshu Monastery area for snacks and slower old-city walking.
- Chunxi Road and Taikoo Li for easy logistics and late dining.
Ordering Notes
- Ask for 微辣 if you want mild. In Chengdu, mild can still be spicy.
- Hotpot oil broth clings to food. Order clear broth or tomato broth if someone at the table needs relief.
- Do not order every famous spicy dish in one meal; numbness builds quickly.
- Sweet water noodles are a good bridge dish: chewy, sweet, spicy, and very Chengdu.
