Beijing 3-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
Three days in Beijing is enough for the core first trip if you keep each day anchored. Do not try to stack every palace, museum, wall section, and food street. Beijing is large, security checks take time, and the best days leave room for walking slowly once you reach the old city.
Best For
Three-Day Route
Tiananmen, Forbidden City, Jingshan
Start early around Tiananmen, enter the Forbidden City with a reservation, then climb Jingshan Park for the roofline view. Keep dinner simple: roast duck or zhajiangmian near your hotel.
Temple of Heaven and hutongs
Go to Temple of Heaven in the morning, then move north for Lama Temple, Wudaoying, or nearby hutongs. This is a good day for lamb hotpot or old Beijing snacks.
Great Wall day
Treat Mutianyu or another Great Wall section as the main plan. Return to the city for an easy dinner instead of adding another major sight.
Use evenings lightly
Beijing evenings are better for one meal and one walk than for another checklist sight. Distances and traffic can quietly eat the night.
Booking Notes
- Reserve Forbidden City tickets before the visit window when possible.
- Carry passport details for ticketed sights and real-name bookings.
- For the Great Wall, choose a direct bus, hotel-arranged transfer, or private driver if it is your first China trip.
- Check museum closure days before locking the route.
Route Mistakes to Avoid
- Do not place the Great Wall after the Forbidden City on the same day.
- Do not underestimate security queues around Tiananmen and major museums.
- Avoid hotels far from subway lines if you only have three days.
- Keep one flexible meal each day so restaurant queues do not break the route.
Chinese Search Terms
Use these Chinese terms in maps and local apps when checking ticket entrances, restaurant areas, and transfer routes.
Planning Note
The first Beijing trip works best when Day 1 is imperial Beijing, Day 2 is old-city Beijing, and Day 3 is the Great Wall. That structure is simple, but it protects the trip from overreach.
