Guangzhou Food Guide: Dim Sum, Roast Meats, Claypot Rice, and Dessert

Guangzhou is one of the easiest Chinese cities to plan around food because meals already have a rhythm: morning tea, a noodle or roast-meat lunch, claypot rice or seafood at night, then dessert if you still have room. The challenge is choosing, not finding.

How to Eat Through the Day

Breakfast

Make time for morning tea

Dim sum is not just breakfast, but morning is the classic rhythm. Order shrimp dumplings, siu mai, rice noodle rolls, buns, and tea.

Lunch

Use noodles or roast meats

Wonton noodles, roast goose rice, char siu rice, or boat congee keep the day moving without giving up local flavor.

Dinner

Choose claypot rice or a bigger Cantonese meal

Claypot rice is excellent in cooler weather. A proper Cantonese dinner can include steamed soup, white-cut chicken, vegetables, and roast meats.

Snack

End with dessert

Double-skin milk, ginger milk pudding, and sweet soups are part of the city's food identity, not an afterthought.

Where to Look

  • Liwan for old Guangzhou food, dessert shops, and traditional streets.
  • Yuexiu for convenient classic restaurants and central sightseeing.
  • Tianhe for modern malls, late dining, and easier hotel logistics.
  • Shamian and Xiguan areas for slower walks before or after meals.

Ordering Notes

  • At dim sum restaurants, tea may be charged per person. That is normal.
  • Roast goose is richer than roast duck. Order vegetables or soup for balance.
  • Claypot rice takes time because the rice crust forms slowly. Do not order it when rushed.
  • Cantonese food is usually mild, but sauces and freshness matter. Choose focused shops.

Chinese Search Terms

Use these terms on Douyin, Dianping, and Amap Street Ranking (高德扫街榜). Compare recent videos, menu photos, prices, nearby hot spots, queue comments, and whether the restaurant fits your walking route before choosing a specific shop.

Local Note

In Guangzhou, one big checklist meal is less satisfying than three smaller meals placed well through the day.
